MALTA BUDGET 2020 HIGHLIGHTS

Property

  • Low-income earners aged under 40 can qualify for an interest-free loan of up to €17,500.
  • Stamp duty exemption for first-time buyers on first €175,000 of a property’s value. 
  • Scheme to restore facades of old houses Irrestawra Darek extended for a further year.
  • Individuals acquiring or inheriting residential property in which they plan to establish their own residence will benefit from a reduced rate of duty of 3.5% on the first € 175,000.
  • Property scheme for property bought in Gozo will be extended for a further year and taxed at 2%.
  • Profits derived from the assignment of rights on a promise of sale relating to immovable property will be taxed at a final tax rate of 15% on the first €100,000. Profits over € 100,000 will be taxed at 35%. 

Rental tenants

  • Extended income caps on eligibility thresholds for rent benefits: up to €19,000 in income for single people and €32,000 for families with children.
